About the Division of General Internal Medicine 

Our mission

We are dedicated to providing the very best compassionate, patient-centered care leading to outstanding clinic outcomes. Wellness, prevention, and collaborative care are our clinical practice cornerstones. In our practice environment, we also train future doctors using the very latest evidence-based knowledge and techniques while researching ways to continuously advance the art and science of primary care.

Our role

We serve a pivotal role in providing clinician educators for both the Internal Medicine Residency Program as well as primary care clerkships within the School of Medicine. Our faculty are well-regarded for their excellent skills in providing complex and clinically difficult care in collaboration with top regarded specialty services. UC San Diego Health is recognized as a Vizient Top 10 organization and serves as the leading #1 Hospital in San Diego by the U.S. News and World Report. Our research spans diverse interests, from clinical studies within and across disciplines to new ways to optimize patient outcomes, quality of life as well as physician engagement, and well-being. 

Our faculty

We consist of over 70 physicians and more than 50 active faculty members. Primary care/clinical care, research, and teaching by faculty members occur at both UC San Diego Health and the VA San Diego Medical Center. We have innovative clinical programs in bone health, obesity, travel medicine, women’s health, and population health. Faculty have additional board certification and certificate recognition in infectious disease, pediatrics, obesity medicine, and clinical informatics. We also serve an important role as faculty for the Internal Medicine Residency Program as well as within the School of Medicine offering education in primary care clerkships.
